It’s a two-time champion and two-time runner-up. History clearly speaks for Gokulam Kerala as they take on Kerala United in the 10th Scoreline Kerala Premier League Final at MK Jinchandran Stadium here on Sunday.
Gokulam, who last won the KPL in 2021, looked shaky in the first semi-final of their doubles match against fledgling Kovalam FC and snagged a match-winner in added time, but turned on the power in the second leg to deliver a 3-0 win.
With his main team being a former I-League champion – finishing third this year – Gokulam, coached by Paulo Jorge da Silva, also has solid experience behind him.
On the other hand, Kerala United, set to play their first KPL final, won their first-leg semi-final against Wayanad United by a handsome 3-0 but lost the second leg 0-1.
But Kerala had an extra rest day and more time to put things right.
The two teams drew 1-1 in the Super Six round and the final could be a very close affair.
“I respect them, they are a very good team…it’s going to be a tough fight,” said Saheed Ramon, Kerala coach.
The winner of the match gets a ticket to the Second Division I-League, but since Gokulam already has a team in the I-League, Kerala is guaranteed a place.
Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m
