India have qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final after a 2-1 home win at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and Rohit Sharma’s side face Australia again in the Summit at the Oval in June. Qualification fell apart as India drew in the last game of the four-match series and New Zealand beat their other contender – Sri Lanka – by 2 wickets. Indian cricketers will now be busy with the Indian Premier League (IPL) and several pundits have expressed their doubts about how they could adapt back to Test cricket. Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar believes the team has a good chance of winning the title, but also pointed out that much will depend on team selection and how players can adapt to the conditions during the game.
“We played well and we have a good team, a balanced team. In these conditions, you need to see the overhead conditions, and that’s where prediction comes in as well. In Test cricket, you need to understand the conditions for the next five days and choose the squad accordingly,” Tendulkar said at the India Today Conclave 2023.
“It would be a bit of a challenge for a captain to have extra spinners on the team to find the right balance. I just think from an Indian point of view, let the Australians do what they want. We have a very good chance,” added Tendulkar.
Tendulkar also lamented the decline in interest in ODI cricket, saying the format had become monotonous in the recent past.
“It will undoubtedly be monotonous. There are two parts. One is the current format and the next is what I think should be played. Let me talk about the current format, which has been around for a while…two new balls. Having two new balls eliminates the backswing. Even though we’re in the 40th over of the game, it’s actually the 20th over of this ball,” said Sachin Tendulkar.
