New Delhi: Every year on March 20th, people around the world celebrate World Oral Health Day with the main goal of raising awareness of the importance of oral health. The purpose of this day is to urge people to practice good oral hygiene, take care of their teeth and educate them on how to avoid dental problems.
Based on a WHO Global Oral Health report, it has been estimated that around 1 in 4 people worldwide suffer from permanent tooth decay. In contrast, 514 million children suffer from primary tooth decay.

World Dental Health Day was first celebrated on September 12, 2007, after which the concept for the celebration was presented for the first time. It was the birthday of Dr. Charles Godon, the founder of FDI. Later, in 2013, World Dental Health Day was moved to March 20 after the launch of the campaign.

The main goal of World Oral Health Day is to raise awareness of those dealing with or suffering from oral diseases. It is believed that an unhealthy tongue also has negative effects on everyone’s overall health, as well as on their emotional, social, mental and physical health in general.
The purpose of the day is also to show people that good oral hygiene can help prevent many diseases such as tooth decay, bad breath and gum disease. In particular, poor dental health can also be a factor in many serious health problems. such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, stroke and breathing problems.

World Oral Health Day has a specific motto every year. The theme for 2023 is “Be proud of your mouth”. The same has been true for three years as part of a campaign launched by the World Dental Federation (FDI) in 2021.
