KL Rahul played with the racquet for India on Friday after hitting a fantastic half-century in the first ODI against Australia in Mumbai. The Karnataka resident played a crucial inning of 75 not out alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who also contributed with 45 runs, and helped India win the match at Wankhede.
“I saw three wickets come down early, Starc swung the ball well and when he brings the ball back he’s a dangerous bowler. I was just trying to play regular cricket batting. I removed a few borders and that calmed my nerves. I fought with Shubman, Hardik and Jadeja. The talk was that there is help at the wicket, but we didn’t want to get in our bowl and outplay a particular bowler. We wanted to be positive and take the loose balls. If we’re good without footwork we could do well and it was fun batting with Jadeja,” the right-hander said after the game.
“The minute the left-hander came in, I got a couple of loose balls. That happens to the best bowlers. The left-hander went in and that worked for us. Jaddu hit beautifully and he runs hard between the wickets. He’s in great shape and knows what to do in those situations,” he said.
KL also spoke about the Wankhede pitch and how Shami’s brilliant spell has helped them.
“When we started, I didn’t think the pitch was going to help bowlers that much. When Shami returned for his second spell, he performed miracles. Any team that wants to win must pick wickets in the middle overs. If there’s bounce, I like to keep wickets. It’s a bit of a challenge when it’s slow and low, it’s a physical challenge. The ball moved and I like playing here at Wankhede,” he said.
The Indian team eventually won the game by five wickets and lead the series 1-0. Australia batted first and made 188 runs. Mitchell Marsh hit the best for the Kangaroos with 65-ball 81.
In response, India easily chased down 189 runs overall. They struggled at 39/4, however, but then KL Rahul came in and sewed a 108 run stand alongside Jadeja for the sixth wicket.
