Rival bidders for Manchester United are set to hold talks at the Premier League club’s Old Trafford site this week, British media reports said on Wednesday. The club’s owners, the unpopular Glazer family, announced in November they were conducting a strategic review with selling United being an option on the table. Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe have made bids for the 20-time English champions. The British Press Association said representatives from Sheikh Jassim are expected in Manchester on Thursday, while Ratcliffe will attend a management presentation the next day.
Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim is aiming to take 100 per cent control of United and has garnered the support of some fans by pledging to pay off United’s debt.
Boyhood United fan Ratcliffe’s INEOS company is trying to gain majority control by buying up shares held by the Glazers.
Neither offer is understood to have matched the £6bn ($7.2bn) price reported by the current owners.
Elliott Investment Management has also made it to the next phase of the bidding process, although the US company is said to be offering financing rather than an acquisition.
The Glazers have saddled United with huge debts and also overseen a major slump in the club’s fortunes – last month’s League Cup win at Wembley Stadium was their first trophy in six years.
Ratcliffe, 70, already owns French Ligue 1 club Nice and Swiss club FC Lausanne-Sport.
