Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles in the ODI series against Australia continued with back-to-back golden ducks in the first two games of the series. The 32-year-old was similarly sacked in both games after being pinched with his leg before the wicket by Australia’s pace spearhead Mitchell Starc. Questioning his place in the squad, skipper Rohit Sharma has broken his silence and defended the batter, saying he needs more time to prove himself.

We know nothing of the return of (Shryas) Iyer. At this point there is a seat available, so we have to play against him (Suryakumar). He’s obviously shown a lot of potential with white ball and I’ve said it many times (that) guys with potential will get some run,” Rohit said in the post-match press conference after India’s humiliating 10-wicket loss to Australia at Vizag.
“Obviously he knows he has to do something in a slightly longer format of the game as well. I think things are in his head too. Like I said guys with potential will have plenty of run where you know they shouldn’t feel it. Okay, you know I didn’t get enough chances in that particular slot,” added the Indian captain.
As the world No. 1 T20I batter’s ODI record comes under scrutiny, Rohit has claimed that Suryakumar is aware of the need to perform in the game’s longer formats. The skipper emphasized that the batter had not had a long career with the team and had only played due to injury. Rohit has stated that team management is not looking to replace Suryakumar in the squad at the moment and the batsman will have a longer rope before his ODI performances are judged. However, there are doubts about his place in the squad as Shreyas Iyer is absent through injury and Sanju Samson is not selected despite his excellent record in the format.
“Yeah, he’s come out in the last two games and the series before that too, but he needs that consistent run, like back-to-back games, 7-8 or 10 games like this, to make him feel more comfortable. At the moment he is in the right place if someone has been injured or someone is unavailable. As management we can look at the performance when you give that consistent run and then feel like it’s ok, the runs aren’t coming and (he’s) not looking comfortable. Then we will start thinking about it. At the moment we haven’t gone that route,” added Rohit.
Despite Suryakumar’s poor performance in the series, he is unlikely to be dropped for the series decider against Australia on March 22 in Chennai. This game will be India’s last international match ahead of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In summary, Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles continued in the ODI series and questions were raised about his place in the roster. However, Rohit Sharma has defended the batsman, saying he needs more time to prove himself in the format and is unlikely to be dropped for the series decider against Australia.
