Google AdSense is a platform for an advertising program operated by Google. Website operators can register with Google AdSense if they want to earn money with advertising blocks in the form of banners or links on their websites. The so-called “publisher” receives a fee for each click on context-related advertising material displayed via the Google program. Google AdSense is therefore comparable to an affiliate program. Google AdSense can also be described as a complementary platform to Google AdWords since it allows the publisher to earn part of the money that advertisers pay for their ads via Google AdWords.
Background and history
The Google Ad Sense system was launched by Google back in 2003. In the beginning, publishers could only display text ads on their websites. Since 2009, Google AdSense can also be used to control advertising banners. To date, Google has paid more than 5 billion euros to publishers.

Google AdSense is the largest network in the world with places for display advertising. According to Google, 80% of Internet users can be reached in this way
Functionality
To sign up for Google Ad Sense, the publisher must have a valid Google account, operate or manage their own website or blog, and be at least 18 years old. In order for Google to be able to pay out the click payment, a publisher also needs a valid bank account. The limit for a withdrawal is 70 EUR. If the click commission is higher, the advertising fee will be transferred monthly to the specified account.
Quality Guidelines
In order to keep the quality of the publisher pages and thus the attractiveness for advertising customers via AdWords as high as possible, Google checks every website before it is included in the Google AdSense advertising program. Both content and technical factors play a role here; a total of 13. For example, webmasters who operate websites with content that is harmful to young people, pornographic or glorifies violence or who sell tobacco, alcohol or weapons are not allowed to include any advertising blocks via Google Ad Sense on the corresponding pages. Criteria for the exclusion of AdSense are also copyright violations or manipulated clicks on links in the advertising blocks published by the publisher.
The quality checks also take place at regular intervals after the recording and are carried out both by the algorithm and manually. If a page does not meet the quality requirements, it will be excluded from AdSense.
Selection of advertising material
When choosing the advertising blocks, the publisher has the option of adapting them to the layout of his site in terms of colour and graphics. You can choose between banner or link advertising blocks. Google already provides all common banner sizes via the AdSense user interface. In addition, the website operator can also decide in which areas of his site and on which subpages of his project advertising from Google should be displayed. Google Ad Sense limits the number of possible advertising blocks to three banners and three link blocks on content pages.
If the publisher has decided on a certain banner format or a link block and has adapted it optically to his page layout, he can embed the corresponding code as a placeholder on his website. Some CMS systems offer their users pre-installed advertising space. Blog systems such as WordPress or Blogger can also facilitate the integration of AdSense advertising blocks with the help of appropriate plugins.
In order to check that the banner is displayed correctly, any ad blockers that may have been switched on should be deactivated for a short time or an exception should be defined for the page in question.
Google specifies its offer for site operators with further AdSense products:
- AdMob: AdSense for apps
- Ad Mobile: AdSense for websites optimized for mobile phones
- Interactive Media Ads (IMA): AdSense for games and videos
Amount of click prices
The amount that Google pays for a click on the publisher’s page is not fixed at a flat rate. Because the click price on Google is based on several factors. On the one hand, popularity, number of impressions and visitor behaviour on the publisher’s website influence the level of click remuneration, on the other hand, it plays a role in how strong the competition within Google AdWords customers is for a specific search term or topic. The more cents or euros AdWords customers bid for a click on a text/banner ad for a specific search term or placement, the higher a publisher’s website is rated by Google in terms of visitor numbers, visitor behaviour and content quality, the higher the Number of clicks a publisher receives through the AdSense platform.
Google Analytics and AdSense
Anyone who opts for the Google AdSense advertising program from Google can analyze the evaluation of clicks on the advertising banners on their site and optimize their income by optimizing the placement of advertising banners or link blocks. To do this, he can use the AdSense administration interface or link his Google AdSense account, if available, to the Google Analytics account for an even more precise evaluation.
